Frequently asked questions

Normally we will have the books ready for you at the start of the first lesson. However, we can imagine you might want to start reading and studying in advance. If so, please contact us to see how we can coordinate for you to receive the study packages in advance.

There is a number on your gift certificate. Send us an email with this number and indicate which course you want to follow, and with which starting date.

For WSET Level 2 course, inform us as soon as possible if you can’t make it to a lesson. We can’t give any guarantees, but if it is possible to offer you a place in another group, we will certainly do so. This is of course subject to availability. Due to the short duration of the course, this is not possible at a WSET Level 1 course.

We request the exams 3 weeks in advance. Before then, postponing an exam is possible free of charge. When the exams have been requested, it is no longer possible to change the exam date and we will be forced to charge the costs of a re-exam.

There are numerous institutions around the world that offer sommelier certifications. Some of the most recognized internationally are the Court of Master Sommeliers (CMS) and Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI). These institutions, as well as the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) are all reputable organizations and their certifications internationally recognized.

For ease of comparison, we mention below the main differences between the CMS and WSET in terms of their focus and approach.

Focus and Target Audience

WSET: WSET offers programs that cater to both professionals and wine enthusiasts, providing comprehensive education on production, regions, styles, and systematic tasting techniques.

CMS: The Court of Master Sommeliers primarily focuses on the service aspect of wine, with an emphasis on wine knowledge, tasting proficiency, and service skills. It is primarily aimed at professionals working in the hospitality industry, such as sommeliers and restaurant staff.

Teaching Approach

WSET: WSET courses adopt a structured academic approach, offering in-depth knowledge about wine regions, grape varieties, production methods, and wine styles. Tasting skills are also developed, but the focus is broader compared to the CMS.

CMS: The CMS curriculum places a strong emphasis on practical, hands-on learning, with a focus on developing the sensory skills needed for blind tasting and wine service. It provides a rigorous training environment and mentorship opportunities.

Examination Structure

WSET: WSET offers Levels 1 to 4 for wines. Their examinations assess theoretical knowledge through multiple-choice questions, short written answers, and blind tasting assessments.

CMS: The CMS certification process consists of four levels: Introductory, Certified, Advanced, and Master Sommelier. The exams typically include blind tasting, theory, and practical service components, with an emphasis on the ability to identify wines through blind tasting.

Recognition and Prestige

WSET: The WSET is globally recognized and respected for its comprehensive wine education programs. WSET certifications are highly regarded among wine professionals, educators, and employers.

CMS: The Court of Master Sommeliers is highly regarded within the wine industry, particularly in the realm of sommelier service. Achieving the prestigious Master Sommelier title is considered a significant accomplishment and is recognized worldwide.

It’s worth noting that both the CMS and WSET are respected institutions, and the choice between them depends on your career goals and the specific aspects of wine education you wish to pursue.
