Description
Theory:
The WSET Level 2 course will give you a good overview of the world of beer.
In class, you will learn about the main raw materials such as malt, hops, yeast, and water, the different styles of beer, and the regions where they are produced. We will show you how certain decisions made in the brewery, such as the type of fermentation or the use of additional ingredients, affect the aromas, flavors, and textures of the beers we taste.
All the theoretical knowledge you need to pass the exam can be found in the study book and study guide provided. PWA offers 24 hours of classes. We recommend that students review the study material at home as well, for a minimum of 1 hour per week and no less than 11 hours in total. To get the most out of the classes, we ask that you read the material to be covered in the next session in advance. We suggest that you devote several hours per week to studying the course materials. The textbook is not extensive, but it is very comprehensive.
Tasting:
Although blind tasting is not part of the exam, the WSET’s systematic approach to tasting requires a great deal of attention. With the help of your WSET-certified instructor, you will gradually become accustomed to this analytical way of evaluating different beers. In total, we will taste around 25 styles of beer. To understand what we are tasting and where certain flavors come from, we always make connections between the theory in the textbook and what we find in our glass. You can be sure that you will taste excellent beers that are representative of different styles. We also pay attention to beers from the more economical segment of the market, which is necessary to learn how to evaluate quality at all levels.
Exam:
The WSET Level 2 Beer exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. At least 28 of these must be answered correctly to pass. Blind beer tasting is not part of the exam at this level. The exam can be retaken at least twice a year.
