Description
Theory
The WSET Level 1 Award in Spirits course offers a clear introduction to the world of distilled spirits. During the course we explore the main categories of spirits, how they are produced, and the key factors that influence their style and flavour.
You will learn about the fundamental stages of spirit production including fermentation, distillation and post-distillation operations. The course also introduces the main global spirit categories such as whisky, rum, tequila, vodka, gin and liqueurs.
All the theoretical knowledge required to pass the exam is included in the textbook and study guide provided to students. The material is concise and well structured, allowing participants to build a solid understanding of spirits without being overwhelming.
Panama Wine Academy provides six guided learning hours in addition to the 45 minutes required for the exam. In addition to classroom learning, students are encouraged to review the study materials at home.
Tasting
During the course students will taste a selection of spirits representing the main global categories.
Your educator will guide you through a simple and structured tasting approach designed to help you identify the key aromas and flavours of each spirit. This introduction to tasting helps students develop confidence when evaluating and
discussing spirits.
Tasting is an essential part of understanding how production methods influence
flavour. However, tasting is not part of the exam at this level.
Examination
The WSET Level 1 Award in Spirits exam consists of 30 multiple-choice questions.
Students must answer at least 70% correctly in order to pass.
