Description
Theory
The WSET Level 1 Spirits course offers a clear introduction to the world of spirits. During the program, we explore the main categories, how they are produced, and the key factors that influence their style and flavor profile.
You will learn about the fundamental stages of production, including fermentation, distillation, and post-distillation operations. The course also covers the world’s major categories of spirits, such as whiskey, rum, tequila, vodka, gin, and liqueurs.
All the theoretical content necessary to pass the exam is included in the textbook and study guide provided to students. The material is concise and designed to build a solid foundation of knowledge in a clear and accessible way.
Panama Wine Academy offers six hours of guided training, plus 45 minutes set aside for the exam. Additionally, students are encouraged to review the material at home to reinforce their learning.
Tasting
During the course, students will taste a selection of spirits representative of the world’s major categories.
The instructor will guide participants through a simple, structured approach to tasting, designed to help identify the key aromas and flavors of each product. This introduction helps build confidence in evaluating and discussing spirits.
Tasting is a fundamental tool for understanding how production methods influence flavor. However, it is not part of the exam at this level.
Exam
The WSET Level 1 Spirits exam consists of 30 multiple-choice questions. To pass, students must answer at least 70% of the questions correctly.
If a student does not pass, they may retake the exam in a future sitting.
