Description
Theory
The WSET Level 2 Award in Spirits course provides a comprehensive overview of the world of distilled spirits. We explore the major categories of spirits and examine how raw materials, fermentation, distillation, and maturation influence style and quality.
During the course you will learn about the key stages of spirit production and how producers make decisions that shape aroma, flavor, texture, and overall character.
We also discuss the main global categories of spirits such as whisky, rum, tequila, mezcal, vodka, gin, and liqueurs, as well as how these products are labeled and classified.
All the theoretical knowledge required to pass the exam is contained in the supplied study book and study guide. Panama Wine Academy provides 24 guided learning hours. In addition to classroom time, students are encouraged to review the study material at home, with a recommended minimum of 11 hours of selfstudy in total.
To get the most out of the classes, students are encouraged to read the material that will be covered in the next session as preparation. The textbook is concise but highly informative, providing a clear and structured approach to understanding spirits.
Tasting
Although formal blind tasting is not part of the exam at this level, the WSET’s structured approach to tasting spirits will receive special attention throughout the course.
With the guidance of your educator, you will taste a wide range of spirits representing the major global categories. The aim is to help students connect theory with sensory experience to understanding how production methods influence what we smell and taste in the glass.
At Panama Wine Academy, we carefully select spirits that represent different styles and quality levels. This allows students to develop a deeper understanding of how spirits differ in aroma, structure, and complexity.
Exam
The WSET Level 2 Award in Spirits exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions.
Students must answer at least 55% correctly to pass. If a student does not pass the exam, PWA offers the opportunity to resit the exam during future exam sessions.
